Backlash: A Brief History of the WWE Pay-Per-View Event

Early Years

The Backlash pay-per-view event was first held in 1999 and has been a staple of the WWE calendar ever since. The event was originally created as a way to capitalize on the popularity of the Attitude Era, and it has featured some of the most iconic matches in WWE history.

2001 Backlash

The 2001 Backlash event was particularly memorable, as it featured a main event match between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H for the WWF Championship. The match was a brutal affair, and Austin ultimately emerged victorious. The event also featured a number of other memorable matches, including a tag team match between The Hardy Boyz and Edge and Christian.

Recent Years

In recent years, the Backlash pay-per-view event has been renamed several times. In 2019, it was replaced by Stomping Grounds, but the latter event was discontinued after one year. In 2023, the Backlash event returned, and it is now scheduled to be held annually in France.
