Early Life and Military Service
Chelsea Elizabeth Manning (born Bradley Edward Manning on December 17, 1987) is an American activist and whistleblower. Manning joined the US Army in 2007 and was deployed to Iraq in 2009.
Wikileaks and Whistleblower Activity
While in Iraq, Manning had access to classified military documents and information. In 2010, she began leaking these materials to the website WikiLeaks, an organization that publishes secret information from anonymous sources.
Espionage Trial and Imprisonment
In 2013, Manning was found guilty of charges including espionage for leaking the classified military files. She was sentenced to 35 years in prison, but her sentence was later commuted by President Barack Obama.
Activism and Later Career
Manning was released from prison in 2017 and has since become an outspoken advocate for whistleblower rights, transparency in government, and the transgender community. She has also worked as a consultant and author.
