Teenagers Die in E-Bike Crash After Police Pursuit
Investigation Launched into Officer's Conduct
Two teenagers, Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and Harvey Evans, 15, tragically lost their lives in a road accident in Cardiff on May 22, 2023.
The incident occurred shortly after 18:00 BST on Snowden Road in the Ely area of the city. The boys were found unresponsive by a police officer who had been driving a van behind them. Despite the officer's efforts to provide first aid, both teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the police officer had been following the boys on their e-bike for several minutes before the crash occurred. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the officer's conduct to determine if any wrongdoing took place.
The deaths of Kyrees Sullivan and Harvey Evans sparked hours of violence and unrest in the Ely area. Hundreds of mourners gathered for the teenagers' funerals, and tributes have been paid to their memory on social media.
The tragedy has raised questions about the use of police powers and the safety of young people riding e-bikes. The IOPC's investigation is expected to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident and help inform future policy and practice.
